Holiday travel can be a bit of a pain sometimes. It’s hard enough getting through your own cramps and boredom without having to entertain kids as well. If you’re taking a flight you don’t even have the option of stopping to give them a break, so you have to be especially prepared. Here are some tips to help you out.
All airlines now provide an online, early check-in service, so you can make sure you’re all sitting together – preferably in one of the side rows. Being in the middle row can be distracting for the kids. It gives them two aisles to escape from, and often means you’ll be alongside other passengers, which isn’t ideal if you need to keep a child’s attention. You can stipulate that you’re travelling with kid’s right from the off, and let the airline figure out how to place you, but it’s also worth checking on the day to make sure the seating is just right for you and the little ones.
Thankfully most airlines provide good entertainment services for long haul flights, so you can easily set kids up with a movie or music. If you’re travelling by car you can get together toys and games, as long as they won’t be a distraction to you. Some electronic devices are allowed in-flight too, but do check before you fly to avoid tantrums. If your child is nervous about travelling it can be good to talk about it beforehand. On most flights you can check on the progress’s progress, on the seat screens too. This way they can feel reassured and have some information to make sense of it all.
When it comes to food you can prepare yourself by bringing along treats that you know the kids like. On long car journeys you can’t be sure that the rest stops will offer what they want, and with a flight you can be fairly certain that the food will be gross. Making a picnic out of it is a positive way of dealing with things.
Planning and preparing well in advance can make those confined hours less of a headache for you, your kids, and your fellow passengers
