Thanks in part to the popularity of such programs as “America’s Got Talent” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” many young girls everywhere are dreaming of dancing center stage. At a creative arts camp, girls with an enthusiasm in dance, music, and other fine arts can gain an introduction into this world, or hone skills they already have.
Art camps generally group girls, usually aged 8 through their teenage years, with skilled coaches, from whom theyll have the opportunity to be introduced to many different fine arts activities. While the emphasis of some camps is dance, many more offer a diversity of training in all the fine arts, and also have teachers who can instruct in other artistic areas including theater and/or music. Some even try to blend the best of the conventional camp experience, such as camp fires and hiking, into the curriculum to round out the experience.
For young girls prepared to invest in intensive dance instruction in a summer camp environment, its important that they have access to top notch instructors. Both residential and day camps will place the girls based on age and skill levels, under the tutelage of instructors possessing the necessary capabilities and real-world practical experience. Some camps even retain the services of big names in the industry to both inspire and train the girls.
Access to top notch instruction is even more important for girls who have advanced to higher levels in their craft, as they tend to reach skill plateaus more quickly and require coaches who will challenge them. Furthermore, known professionals tend to attract young, talented dancers, so the teachers have the opportunity to share their skills and experience with upcoming performing artists.
A residential creative arts camp be as short as a few days, or can last almost the entire summer. There, girls are shown many dance styles including classical ballet, tap, modern and jazz. Most camps offer beginner courses as well as advanced for those who may have many years of prior dance training.
For a less demanding approach, many more traditional summer programs offer exercises focused as much on entertaining as on preparation for a career in the arts. In addition, young girls have the opportunity to explore other creative outlets, offering instruction in drawing, painting, theatre, music and more. These activities help to diversify their time and broaden their horizons simultaneously.
Art camp is still getting away from home for most children, so its not all work. Morning walks, campfire, river rafting trips, swimming, horseback riding, crafts and a variety of sporting activities may be available to mix it up and make it fun for the kids. In general, girls have many opportunities to explore their resourcefulness, even at the most demanding dance camps. For those who have a very strong desire for pursuing a career in their art, summer programs can be a significant tool. Practice makes perfect, and practice is what they get. For others who arent certain, this specialized atmosphere may turn out to be that burst of inspiration needed to convince them its what they really want. At the very least, girls should have fun, gain poise and self confidence and make new friends.
Parents will want to look into a number of camps to compare what each one has to offer. Research should possibly include establishing the level of intensity, other accessible activities, accommodations, and whether parents have the chance to see their daughter perform at camp’s end. If high-level instruction is preferred, check out the instructors. This is not merely in the interests of giving the girls the best training possible, but to convince parents that a creative arts camp is worth every penny it costs.
