Lake Como in Italy is heaven on earth. For me it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. I try and visit every year (sometimes more than once) and research the area around it.
Every town and village in the Lake Como region is special but the town of Bellagio heads the list in beauty, as its strategic location at the point where Lake Como branches into a Y-shape lends it a natural charm that is quite breathtaking. The impressive villas in the Lake Como region are a major attraction and the Villa Melzi D’Eril in Bellagio with its magnificent gardens is no exception to this fact. Shopping at the Via Garibaldi is a treat and if you are in the mood to splurge, there are several posh hotels to pamper you.
Laglio is a quiet and beautiful village, north of Cernobbio on Lake Como’s western shore. It shot up in fame after Hollywood star George Clooney bought a grand villa here, but besides this the village has a lot to offer apart from its scenic beauty. One can explore the beautiful 17th century Church of San Giorgio with its grand stucco work and the 18th century Villa Melograno with its huge garden that leads to the lake. A visit to the Buco dell’Orso cave also known as the Bear’s Hole, located in the nearby village of Torreggia can prove to be quite exciting.
Lake Como is famous for its picturesque views and grand villas and there is no better way of exploring it than by ferry or one of the commercial cruises that are generally offered at the weekends. You can embark at some of the popular towns and villages to visit its magnificent villas and plush gardens or dine at a fine restaurant or just shop around for memoirs to take back with you for family and friends. You can look up the cruise offerings and choose one that suits you and set off to explore a lake of immense beauty.
One would most instantly choose to take lake excursions on the ferry, as this is by far one of the best ways to explore each and every town and village in the region. The trip along the river is very stimulating with picturesque backgrounds, scenic natural surroundings, imposing villas with magnificent gardens, quaint villages and the lovely shorelines that offer a treat to your eyes. You can even embark at towns and villages that you wish to explore and then catch another ferry forward to another town or return to your original destination for more excitement the following day.
